Thinking Machines Lab released its first model, Inkling. The startup is run by Mira Murati, who was OpenAI's chief technology officer, and for a few days in November 2023, its chief executive.
Inkling features a highly customizable Mixture-of-Experts architecture designed to balance resource efficiency with deep multimodal understanding.
It was trained on 45 trillion tokens of text, images, audio. It carries 975 billion parameters but wakes only about 41 billion of them for any single task. It reasons over text, images, and audio, handles a context window of up to 1 million tokens, and is open-weight which means anyone can download it and rebuild it.
And it flags when it isn't sure, instead of bluffing.
Inkling is not the strongest model available today, closed or open. Thinking Machines states this clearly.
That is the entire point.
In Mira's own words, her future vision for AI is like a tandem bike with human and machine each pedaling to its strength, neither one a passenger. She calls them interaction models: AI that takes in your voice, your silences, your interruptions in rolling chunks and collaborates in real time rather than trading turns.
The bet behind this is interesting. It's a wager on a different shape for this whole technology. And the more options we have, the richer the ecosystem gets. Until next time, Ram —
