AI leadership is a 3X competitive advantage.

AI leadership is a 3X competitive advantage. BUT not for the reason most people think. Boston Consulting Group (BCG) surveyed +500 executives globally. One finding caught my attention ->
BCG reported roughly three times the competitive outperformance associated with well-prepared leaders compared with mature AI deployment alone: 66% versus 20%.
And when strong leadership combines with mature AI practices, BCG reports an additional 80% lift in competitive performance.
The message is clear: AI capability matters AND leadership determines how much of that capability becomes value.
I shared a similar perspective with HR Reporter last week. AI is the new language of business and AI-literate leaders make all the difference.
BCG identifies three dimensions of AI-ready leadership ->
1/ Visionary: Set the direction.
Connect AI to business strategy, NOT just tech strategy. Identify where it can create measurable value, communicate the ambition, and keep refining it as capabilities evolve.
2/ Codeveloper: Get your hands dirty.
Leaders need to use AI themselves, NOT just sponsor it. Work alongside teams, experiment, redesign workflows and create the psychological safety to learn from failure. Nothing builds credibility and psychological safety faster than a leader who is learning in the open.
3/ Steward: Build TRUST into the system.
Define where AI can act autonomously, where it can advise, and where human judgment remains non-negotiable. As I have noted before, good brakes let you go FASTER with AI.
The Big Picture:
We have spent the last few years asking what AI can do.
The harder question now is what leadership must become.
As teams gain the ability to delegate more work to AI, leaders will need to decide what deserves to be done, what good looks like, and where human accountability must remain.
That is operating-model reinvention. It requires rethinking how work gets done, how decisions get made, and how accountability is maintained.
For me, the opportunity is FAR bigger than doing today’s work faster. It is to pursue ambitions that were previously beyond reach.
AI expands what a team can attempt. Leadership (at every level) determines which ambitions are worth pursuing and how to turn them into results. Until next time,
Ram
