The Computer for the Age of AI

Snap just launched Specs. $2,195 augmented reality glasses, shipping this fall. Is this the shape of the computer of the future?

Meta got there first, Google has followed, Apple is following and others are already lining up.

We have gone from Mainframe -> Desktop -> Phone -> Glasses ...

Each step moved the computer closer to us.

Consider that between laptops, smartphones (and smart TVs), we spend 9-10 hours (maybe more) a day looking at screens. AR glasses may absorb both, ending our gaze into tiny 2D screens in favor of a fully immersive 3D interface.

So what does work look like when the whole team is wearing one?

Picture it.

The expert's instructions painted onto the machine in front of you. The building's data hanging in the air beside the room. The new hire who sees what the thirty-year veteran sees, on day one. No screen to look down at, no app to open. The knowledge just there, in the work.

PhD-level intelligence available on-demand triggered by a single word.

Of course there are MANY steps to get there BUT work becoming "automagical" is a vision we can all get behind.

The possibilities are enormous. So are the risks.

Who is recording? What happens to a room when every pair of glasses is listening? What does focus mean when the notification lives on your eye instead of in your pocket?

We may not have the answers yet.

But I am certain of one thing. The screen we have stared at for twenty years is not the final form. The computer is moving from our hands to our faces, and the workplace is about to feel it soon. Until next time,
