OpenAI previewed GPT‑5.6 today with three models named Sol, Terra, and Luna.

Sol comes in at roughly half of what Anthropic charges for Claude Fable 5. Terra gives you last generation’s frontier performance at roughly twice the efficiency, and Luna lands under half of Terra.

Capable models keep getting cheaper faster than most people are budgeting for. The unit economics are moving quarterly; most planning cycles are still annual.

The more interesting shift is architectural.

Sol’s new “ultra” mode hands a task to a set of sub‑agents working in parallel instead of grinding through it alone. We’re starting to build on models that coordinate other models rather than a single reasoning loop. It’s a clear nod to OpenClaw and likely an early fingerprint of its creator, Peter Steinberger, now at OpenAI.

There’s a regulatory tell worth noting too.

All three tiers were rated high‑risk for cyber and biology, which is why the preview is limited to roughly 20 organizations under a government coordinated rollout before it opens up in a few weeks. A “budget” model triggering that level of review says a lot about how far baseline capability has moved.

This also creates new lanes.

If the very frontier becomes a permissioned export, open‑weight and sovereign stacks become the natural home for countries and enterprises that want control, customization, and speed.

The playing field shifts from “who has the biggest model” to “who can build the best systems around them and across them”
