OpenAI just released GPT-5.5 and the leaderboard changed again.

Every few weeks, a new model takes the top spot. But the ranking is only one lens.

The real signals are scattered across a dozen benchmarks → coding agents, computer use, long-context reasoning, hallucination rates, tool-calling accuracy, cost per token, etc.

Each one tells a different story about what these models can actually do.

What I'd watch is shape of the frontier.

The same strengths that make GPT-5.5 great at coding also make it powerful for everyday work on a computer.

On GDPval (relevant to knowledge work), GPT-5.5 now sits at an Elo of 1785. But the crown is moving in weeks, not quarters. (more on GDPval here: https://lnkd.in/gcJy2P9J)

Because these models are getting better at understanding intent, they can move more naturally through the full loop of knowledge work. This applies to finding information, understanding what matters, using tools, checking the output, and turning raw material into something useful.

And it's not just OpenAI. Look at the past week:

→ Anthropic launched Claude Design, turning prompts into prototypes, decks, and one-pagers with Opus 4.7 reading your codebase to apply your design system automatically.

→ Google released Deep Research Max, a Gemini 3.1 Pro agent that plans, browses, synthesizes, and produces visualizations across long-horizon research workflows.

→ Microsoft made Copilot's agentic capabilities generally available inside Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Copilot now takes multi-step actions directly on the canvas, not just suggests them.

→ Salesforce announced Headless 360, exposing the entire platform as APIs, MCP tools, and CLI commands so agents can operate data, workflows, and business logic without ever touching a browser.

The opportunity spectrum continues to grow.

The leaderboard will keep changing.

What won’t change is this: the frontier is becoming more agentic, more general, and more embedded into how work actually gets done.
