NVIDIA has reportedly agreed to acquire Hugging Face for $12.9 billion, a deal that could be one of its most strategically important acquisitions.
NVIDIA of course already dominates AI chips. Hugging Face would strengthen its position further up the stack, at the model and developer layers.
Hugging Face generates about $150 million in annualized revenue, so this is not fundamentally a revenue deal. Its value is that developers use it to discover, download, fine-tune, evaluate and deploy models and datasets.
The thesis is straightforward: if open models flourish, NVIDIA GPUs remain the default computing platform underneath them.
OpenAI (Jalapeño), Anthropic (custom chips in development), Google (TPUs), Amazon (Trainium/Inferentia) and others are increasingly developing their own AI chips. NVIDIA has an incentive to strengthen the open-model ecosystem rather than let AI development become concentrated among a small number of closed-model companies that may increasingly rely on alternative hardware.
Hugging Face also operates compute and hosting services. The acquisition could give Nvidia another route into AI cloud services.
The potential result is a FAR more integrated AI stack = GPU manufacturer + networking provider + AI infrastructure company + cloud participant + model platform + developer ecosystem.
The risk is that Hugging Face’s influence depends partly on neutrality. Once NVIDIA owns it, developers may reasonably question whether that neutrality remains intact. That could create an opening for competing model repositories and developer platforms.
The bigger question is whether an open AI ecosystem can remain genuinely open when its central platform is owned by the world’s dominant AI-chip company.
At roughly 86X revenue, NVIDIA would be paying to become the operating layer through which open AI models are discovered, distributed and deployed.
Until next time,
