Moderna merged HR and IT under a single Chief People and Digital Technology Officer as it scaled AI across the company.


For most of the last century, companies treated work as something solid. Jobs sat in one box, software sat in another, budgets followed the boxes, HR managed the human layer and IT managed the machine layer.


AI turns that architecture into a drag coefficient.


Once intelligence becomes part of the operating layer of the company, every model upgrade changes the physics of work. A task that needed a person in March may need a person plus a model in June. By September, the model may handle the first draft, route the exceptions, write the report, or make the task disappear.


That is the new clock speed.


Moderna is already inside that loop, reorganizing leadership and scaling internal AI tools in parallel.


OpenAI noted in a 2024 case study that within two months of adopting ChatGPT Enterprise, Moderna employees had already created 750 GPTs across the company.


More recently, Moderna has reported deploying more than 3,000 custom GPTs and generative AI models across functions, many of them built on ChatGPT Enterprise and trained on internal data.


This is an organization learning to metabolize machine intelligence.


And metabolism cannot be managed by two organs arguing across a wall.

If the model changes, the work changes. If the work changes, the role changes. Then the team, budget, training, governance, and process all have to move with it.


Separating those decisions across departments creates latency exactly where the enterprise needs speed. That is the real significance of the merger. It collapses the delay between technological capability and organizational design.


The operating principle is: “How fast can the company redesign work when intelligence keeps getting cheaper, faster, and more capable?”


Moderna’s scale makes the lesson clearer.


The company reported approximately 5,000 full-time employees across 18 countries. That is compact for a biotech platform with global reach.


In a company like that, the metric that matters is power per person. If every employee can draw on a widening field of machine capability, hierarchy gives way to something faster: a compact accelerator with a very large engine.

That is why this matters.


At Moderna, HR and IT have already been fused into a single People and Digital Technology organization. I see this as an early signal of how the broader corporate platform (including HR, IT, Corporate Real Estate, and more) is converging into a unified control system for human and machine capability over time.


Why? Because:

In the industrial age, advantage went to the company with the most hands. In the software age, it went to the company with the best code.


In the AI age, advantage will go to the company that can recompose itself the fastest.


And that comes from treating the entire corporate platform as one living system of people, places, and models that can be rewired in real time.
