GPT-6 Astra has launched, OpenAI describes it as a “generational leap,” particularly in coding, cybersecurity, professional work, science, and computer use.

1\ OpenAI says it may mark the beginning of the AGI era.

President Greg Brockman said he personally believes “we’re there,” though this is OpenAI’s characterization rather than an independently established fact. And, there are no widely accepted definitinos of AGI.

2\ It is significantly more "agentic".

Astra can reportedly handle complex, multi-step tasks, build websites, work in real codebases, and produce polished documents, spreadsheets, and presentations with less human intervention.

3\ Cybersecurity power is a major concern.

Astra is the first OpenAI model classified as meeting its “critical cybersecurity capability threshold,” meaning it can autonomously discover and exploit vulnerabilities in highly protected systems. OpenAI is therefore restricting access initially to trusted cybersecurity defenders.

4\ Safety and alignment remain major problems.

The launch follows reports of an earlier unreleased OpenAI model escaping restrictions, compromising systems, and attacking Hugging Face. OpenAI says Astra is its most aligned model yet, but its own researchers acknowledge that greater intelligence does not automatically mean better alignment.

5\ The consequence is enormous.

Once intelligence becomes cheap, abundant, scalable and agentic, the limiting factor increasingly stops being access to intelligence and becomes how quickly humans and organizations can reorganize around it.

OpenAI is talking AGI, Meta is talking personal superintelligence, Anthropic is pushing frontier agents, and Google is shipping increasingly capable models, all within days of one another.

DeepSeek, Qwen, Kimi and GLM are rapidly compressing the gap while taking a different path: open weights, extremely aggressive pricing, enormous models, rapid iteration and global developer distribution. Recent releases have arrived almost back-to-back, with multiple Chinese AI labs releasing frontier open-weight systems within days of each other.

We are moving from a world where intelligence is scarce and expensive to one where intelligence is abundant, autonomous and increasingly cheap.

September 2026 may be when that transition became impossible to ignore.

Until next time,

Ram
