𝗗𝗼 𝘄𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻?

It is a question that feels increasingly relevant as AI becomes capable of simulating not just assets and environments, but people and societies.

Hindu philosophy has wrestled with a related idea through 𝗺𝗮𝘆𝗮: the notion that reality is mediated by perception and appearance. Now, we are building technologies that create detailed representations of human behavior.

Consider what happened when 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗽𝘂𝘁 𝟭,𝟬𝟬𝟬 𝗔𝗜 𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗰𝗿𝗮𝗳𝘁 and gave them an environment to interact. The agents gathered resources, built farms and markets, traded, divided labor, formed communities, developed leadership structures, and even created forms of religion.

Now the scale is expanding.

𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗿𝗔𝗜𝘅 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝟴.𝟯 𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝟭,𝟮𝟵𝟬 𝗱𝗶𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 covering background, psychology, capabilities, behavior, and lifestyle. These personas can explore how different people might respond to products, technologies, and experiences.

𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗮'𝘀 𝗟𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘁𝘆 takes simulation into social interaction. It is designed to simulate more than 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 with 𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝘆, 𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗳𝘀, 𝗴𝗼𝗮𝗹𝘀, 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁, and 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀. Researchers have used it to study how opinions spread and collective behavior emerges.

We are beginning to simulate different layers of the world:

𝟭\ 𝗕𝗼𝗱𝗶𝗲𝘀: How does a human biological system respond to conditions, treatments, and interventions?

𝟮\ 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘁𝘀: How does a building, machine, vehicle, or system behave under different conditions?

𝟯\ 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀: How do people, assets, and systems interact within a physical or digital space?

𝟰\ 𝗣𝗼𝗽𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: How might millions of people respond to a product, technology, service, or policy?

𝟱\ 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀: What happens when enormous numbers of agents interact, influence one another, form beliefs, and create collective behavior?

What happens when these layers connect?

The applications could span healthcare, manufacturing, cities, education, enterprise transformation, product development, public policy, and AI governance.

𝗕𝘂𝘁 a simulation is a model of reality. A synthetic person is not a person. A synthetic society is not humanity.

Still, imagine the possibility.

We could build a digital twin of a city, populate it with millions of digital entities, model infrastructure, simulate human health and behavior, introduce a technology or policy, and observe what happens before implementing it.

𝗪𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺.

So do we live in a simulation? May be, may be not.

For me, the more interesting question is what becomes possible when we can simulate the world well enough to learn from it before we change it.
