Knowledge work is becoming a multiplayer experience.

I read a fascinating Procter & Gamble (P&G) study, The Cybernetic Teammate: A Field Experiment on Generative AI and Teamwork.

The researchers studied 791 P&G professionals working on real product-innovation challenges. Participants worked either individually or in pairs, with or without access to generative AI.

𝟭\ "𝗛𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘀 + 𝗔𝗜" 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗼 "𝘁𝘄𝗼-𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺 - 𝗔𝗜"

This does not mean an AI-enabled individual outperforms an AI-enabled team or that one person can simply replace two. BUT it does suggest that AI can provide some of the benefits such as: generating ideas, exploring alternatives, and bringing in perspectives beyond one’s immediate expertise.

𝟮\ 𝗔𝗜 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲.

For example, R&D participants naturally tended to approach problems through a technical lens, while Commercial participants emphasized customer and market considerations. With AI, their solutions became more balanced.

𝟯\ 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗜 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀

This should not be read as evidence that AI replicates human relationships or social connection. However it does suggest that conversational AI can influence how people experience knowledge work. This is perhaps by reducing friction, providing responsive interaction, or making it easier to move forward when they are stuck.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗔𝗜 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸.

I've said this before. We have the power of 1,000 PhDs in our pockets. We are moving toward a world where people can dynamically bring together perspectives, expertise, data, and AI capabilities around a problem.

𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗹𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝘀𝗲𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆.

Salesforce and Slack are describing the shift as "multiplayer work." Anthropic is explicitly talking about the move from "single-player" to "multiplayer" experiences, with Claude becoming a participant in team workflows. OpenAI is building shared projects and workspace agents that can be used, edited, and deployed across teams.

The boundaries of an individual’s expertise no longer have to define the boundaries of the thinking they can access. Knowledge work is becoming a multiplayer experience, with people and AI working together across a shared context.
