Has AI changed the minimum viable size of a company?
China's start-up scene offers a fascinating glimpse into the future of work.
A combination of powerful new technologies, difficult employment conditions and dissatisfaction with traditional corporate work is pushing more people toward building on their own.
Few key highlights that caught my eye ->
1\ Solo startups are surging with >7 million one-person companies established in China in 2025. That's 42% more than in 2024. AI is making it much easier for individuals to operate businesses alone.
2\ AI is replacing much of the early startup infrastructure. Founders are using AI for coding, customer support, marketing, administration, video editing and other functions that previously required employees or contractors.
3\ The motivation isn't entirely "entrepreneurial ambition". Some founders were laid off, while others are trying to escape China's demanding corporate culture and gain more autonomy.
4\ Low barriers to entry ≠ successful businesses. The economics are still harsh, with one survey of 1,500 solo companies finding that more than half generate less than $1,000/month in revenue.
5\ Government support is significant, with local governments providing subsidized office space, housing, computing-power vouchers and funding.
For me, the most interesting stat is that 3/4th of the solo founders at Honghub don't have technical backgrounds == AI is lowering the technical barrier to starting software businesses.
And this points to something MUCH bigger.
If AI can give a non-technical person the capabilities of a small software team -> what happens when that same person is inside an org that doesn't give them access to the best AI, has antiquated processes and requires them to work within systems designed for a different technological era?
They may be employed, but they could still be deeply UNDER-utilized relative to their potential. AI is changing (and to a large extent has changed) the relationship between the individual and the organization.
The constraint now is "what does the organization allow this person to do?"
That is a profound shift.
As the cost of intelligence, software and execution continues to fall, the "minimum viable org" may continue to shrink.
And when the tools of creation become available to billions of people, we get more creators, more entrepreneurs, more experimentation. AND, ultimately a much larger pool of human potential working on the problems of civilization.
