Is SpaceX a hyperscaler now?

Is SpaceX a hyperscaler now? Not exactly. Something more interesting is happening.
As SpaceX debuts reportedly targeting valuations approaching $2 trillion what is the market pricing for: a rocket company? an AI company? a "Compute-as-a-Service" provider?
Earlier this year, Elon Musk merged SpaceX with xAI at a combined $1.25 trillion valuation. It meant the Colossus 1 data center in Memphis (more than 220,000 NVIDIA GPUs and roughly 300 megawatts of power) became a SpaceX asset.
Watch what happens next ...
Anthropic leased the entire Colossus 1 facility for roughly $1.25 billion per month through 2029. That's $15 billion a year, paid to a direct competitor, for compute.
Shortly after, Google (the archetype of a hyperscaler) signed on for $920 million per month for another ~110,000 GPUs as "bridge capacity" for Gemini Enterprise.
Worth remembering: Alphabet Inc. invested $900 million into SpaceX in 2015 for roughly a 7% stake (now diluted to around 5% post-merger). That position is worth close to $100 billion today.
So Google is simultaneously a major SpaceX shareholder, a SpaceX customer, and a competitor of the AI lab running inside SpaceX.
The line between supplier, investor, and rival has gone fully porous.
Now, SpaceX is not a hyperscaler in the traditional sense. It does not offer a global, multi-tenant cloud platform.
But it IS doing something more fundamental: becoming a planetary‑scale AI infrastructure provider whose economic weight can sit alongside the hyperscalers. This is especially true if space‑based data centers and GPU clusters materialize as planned.
Anthropic does not pay billions/year to a competitor if compute is abundant. Google does not buy "bridge capacity" from a rival while spending billions on its own capex if the constraints are easing.
The compute bottleneck is being repriced.
The market is now willing to pay AI-infrastructure rents to whoever can assemble power, GPUs, and physical capacity fastest.
What excites me the most is that every time compute gets cheaper, faster, or more available, the surface area of what knowledge workers can attempt expands.
We're about to find out what the next expansion looks like, and the teams that lean in will define the playbook for everyone else.
