EI > AI: The One Advantage Machines Will Never Have

Last quarter, Salesforce noted they consumed nearly 20 trillion tokens, generating more than 2.4 billion agentic actions to date. IDC projects 1.3 billion AI agents deployed by 2028. Gartner estimates 40% of enterprise applications now embed autonomous agents, up from 5% just twelve months ago.We are living through the fastest capability expansion in the history of business. And inside that expansion sits an opportunity almost nobody is naming.
I call it the Wisdom Gap.
Technology capability continues to grow exponentially. Human wisdom has not scaled at the same rate. The gap between those two curves is where trillion-dollar decisions are being made right now.
We are moving from knowledge work to judgment work. The leaders who close that gap first will build the most trusted, resilient, and valuable enterprises of the next decade.
Enlightened Intelligence must outpace Artificial Intelligence.
Intelligence Is Becoming a Commodity. Judgment Is Not.
In my 2024 book The Conscious Machine, I wrote that Enlightened Intelligence must outpace Artificial Intelligence.
By Enlightened Intelligence, I mean the ability to combine self-awareness, ethical clarity, systems thinking, and adaptive judgment at the speed modern decisions require.
This is a capability. When developed, it becomes uniquely yours. And it is the only one your competitors cannot copy.
AI itself is rapidly becoming a commodity. Within months of any major breakthrough, competitors have access to the same models, the same architectures, and the same tooling. Every firm now sees the same pattern: advantage from access disappears quickly.
So what separates companies that create extraordinary value from those that simply deploy faster?
The quality of the human intelligence directing the system. If intelligence becomes commoditized, wisdom becomes the moat.
Will AI Eventually Surpass Wisdom?
The sharpest objection is obvious.
If wisdom is just pattern recognition at a higher level, and AI already surpasses humans at pattern recognition, why wouldn’t it eventually surpass human judgment as well?
It is a fair question.
A 2024 paper from Stanford and the University of Waterloo, published in Trends in Cognitive Sciences, defines wisdom as the ability to navigate problems that are ambiguous, novel, or computationally intractable. Situations where there is no clear model, no stable data distribution, and no known correct answer.
The researchers describe two layers of intelligence.
The first is task-level strategy: rules, heuristics, and learned patterns. AI already excels here.
The second is metacognition: the ability to monitor and regulate your own thinking, to recognize when your model of the world is wrong, and to decide which of your own strategies to trust when the probabilities cannot be known in advance.
This second layer is where the asymptote (approaching but never reaching) lives.
These are not optimization problems with hidden solutions waiting to be found. They are situations where the structure of the problem itself is uncertain.
AlphaGo’s Move 37 is a good example of how far optimization can go. A move so unexpected it looked like an error until it until it defeated world champion Lee Sedol.
AI can simulate metacognition. Systems can track confidence levels, flag uncertainty, and route decisions accordingly. But simulating the monitoring of cognition is not the same as having a stake in the outcome.
Wisdom operates precisely where patterns break down.
A CEO deciding whether to deploy AI in a context with no precedent. A leader weighing values that cannot be reduced to a single metric. Speed against trust. Efficiency against dignity. Innovation against long-term stability.
A machine can calculate that a decision carries a 23% risk of harm. A wise leader feels the weight of that 23% because they understand who will bear it. That felt weight changes the decision in ways no confidence score can replicate.
And there is a deeper point. Wisdom includes the ability to remain in uncertainty without forcing premature answers. AI systems are designed to produce outputs. They resolve. Human judgment sometimes requires the discipline not to resolve too quickly, because premature certainty is where the most expensive mistakes are made.
AI will be an extraordinary amplifier of human intelligence. But amplification requires a signal to amplify. That signal is the quality of human judgment directing the system. And that signal does not come from the system itself.
Decision Disciplines Older Than AI
Long before modern computing, several philosophical traditions developed disciplined methods for improving judgment under uncertainty.
The Vedic traditions. Advaita. Buddhism. Taoism. Zen.
For this discussion, I do not view they as religions. They are structured approaches to training attention, self-awareness, ethical reasoning, and clarity of perception. In modern terms, they are cognitive and behavioral technologies for improving decision quality under conditions of uncertainty.
If that sounds abstract, look at where the conversation is already happening.
Sam Altman has referenced ideas from Advaita Vedanta, including the concept of universal consciousness. At Anthropic, philosophy directly informs discussions about AI alignment. DeepMind has explored research into machine consciousness and the limits of artificial cognition.
The point is that they spent thousands of years studying the exact problem we are now facing: how humans make decisions when the stakes are high and the rules are unclear.
Most enterprises have invested heavily in technical capability. Very few have invested with the same seriousness in the quality of the judgment guiding that capability.
The Stream and the Screen
Every enterprise today is swimming in what I call the Stream.
Outputs, predictions, recommendations, automated actions. Dashboards track throughput, tokens processed, latency, cost savings. The stream is constant, fast, and measurable. Most organizations are optimizing it aggressively.
Behind every stream sits something less visible: the frame through which decisions are made.
Values in practice. Assumptions about risk. What gets optimized and what gets ignored. The willingness to question the goal before accelerating toward it.
If culture is the substrate of every organization, then the quality of awareness inside that culture determines the quality of its decisions.
Stream-optimized companies ask: How fast? How much? How cheap?
Screen-aware companies ask first: Is this aligned? Is this responsible? Is this wise?Then they optimize the stream from that foundation.
By the end of this decade, the companies that win will not be the ones with the most AI. They will be the ones with the clearest judgment about how to use it.
The Five Lenses: A Governance Practice for the Age of Autonomous AI
Rules become obsolete quickly in fast-moving systems but lenses provide adaptive clarity.
Instead of prescribing decisions, lenses improve perception. They help leaders see risks, consequences, and trade-offs that would otherwise be missed.
The Five Lenses are a governance practice for decision-making in environments shaped by autonomous systems. They do not replace existing processes. They sharpen them.
Five lenses I believe are especially relevant right now:
1\ The Self Lens
Who is making this decision, and what are they optimizing for?
Before deployment, ask: What outcome am I hoping for? What am I afraid of? What assumption am I not questioning? Poor decisions often begin with unexamined motives.
2\ The Connection Lens
Who and what is affected beyond the immediate use case?
Map second- and third-order effects. In highly connected systems, no decision stays local. Optimizing one metric often shifts cost somewhere else. The question is not whether ripple effects exist, but whether you have taken the time to see them.
3\ The Impermanence Lens
What we build today will become obsolete. Are we building for change?
Is this system designed to evolve, be unwound, or be replaced? Strategies that assume stability fail first in fast-moving environments. Adaptability is not a feature. It is a requirement.
4\ The Upliftment Lens
Does this create real benefit, or does it move the burden elsewhere?
Every optimization has a distribution of impact. Who gains? Who absorbs the cost? Who was not in the room when the decision was made? Organizations that design for long-term benefit build trust their competitors cannot manufacture later.
5\ The Discernment Lens
What are we not seeing?
Assign someone to look for the flaw in the plan. Challenge the assumptions everyone agrees on. The most expensive mistakes in business history were made by people who were certain they were right. Clarity often comes not from more data, but from questioning what you think the data means.
The Window Is Open
The next five years will be defined by leaders who recognize that the human side of AI is neither a soft skill nor a cultural initiative but a strategic capability.
Organizations that invest in the quality of judgment guiding their technology will build systems that are more trusted, more resilient, and more valuable over time.
Those who do not will still deploy AI. They will simply make faster mistakes.
Enlightened Intelligence is not innate. It can be learned, developed, and strengthened, just like any other capability.
The need for it has NEVER been greater.
