Chicago x Quantum Computing

Clusters are won by regions that combine research depth, commercialization infrastructure, and workforce pipelines in the same ecosystem.

Chicago is doing all three at once.

IBM plans to create 750 AI, quantum, cybersecurity, and data-science jobs over the next five years at its new FutureNow Chicago center, supported by a $19M state tax credit and partnerships with the University of Chicago and University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

That announcement sits inside a much larger Illinois quantum strategy: the Illinois Quantum and Microelectronics Park with PsiQuantum as anchor tenant, two DOE quantum research centers at Argonne National Laboratory and Fermilab, and Duality Accelerator feeding the startup pipeline.

International companies like Pasqal and Bluefors are also choosing the region for U.S. operations, while City Colleges of Chicago is building an apprenticeship pipeline to train 500 workers, with IBM committing to hire one-third of qualified graduates.

The real race in quantum is shifting from lab demos to usable algorithms, products, and companies.

The bigger opportunity is what comes next: using quantum to unlock new capabilities in medicine, materials, logistics, energy, finance, and security and building the companies that will turn those breakthroughs into entire new markets.

Until next time,

Ram
